“The Yard Sale” was an installation created from a 30 day residency at the Park Hyatt in Toronto. The goal seemed simple. Spend a month sculpting and showcase the results at “Yorkville Murals”, an event put on by Taglialatella Gallery. The reality was not so simple considering about a month prior to leaving I had never touched clay let alone fire anything in a kiln (don’t tell the gallery).
Most of my career has been spent painting but over the last year I realized I needed a break. If we’re being honest I was burnout and mentally exhausted. I started working with clay to give my hands something to do so my mind could finally shut up.
While working I found myself subconsciously making these mundane everyday objects and I had no idea why. I couldn’t stop. It wasn’t therapeutic, it was spiritual. It finally hit me that for the last year I had spent so much time and energy chasing these big shiny goals in life that I started to devalue all the small things that make it up. All of these objects help shape our lives. They’re drinks with friends, the things we consume, the clothes that we wear and accessories we pair with them. I was tired of feeling like I was rushing through life trying to sell things off for cheap. I ended up with 17 pieces and I created these sculptures and had a “Yard Sale”. Somewhere you might sell things in a hurry but put them on pedestals with the goal being to reintroduce them and reconsider what we’re prioritizing in life.

A special thanks to Park Hyatt TO, Tag Gallery, Dennes & CO, and Halfpint Ceramics for helping me bring this to life.
